Before starting his fitness journey, Don was unhappy with his body and knew he needed to change it. 


“I was severely overweight, and I didn’t have the strength that I needed,” he said. 


Don’s story is relatable for many Americans who struggle with their weight. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) said 41.9% of adults are overweight, meaning 100 million adults have obesity. 


How did Don tackle the issue? He started by working out and shedding pounds from his body. 


“I lost about 30 pounds of fat right off the bat,” he said. 


Losing weight is most manageable at the start of a fitness journey. Your body releases glycogen stores, some of which are just water. Over time, it could get more difficult if you run into a plateau.


That said, persistence gives you the results you desire. Exercising patience and your body is essential to a healthy lifestyle. 


Taking Don’s Story to the Next Level


While losing weight was beneficial, Don didn’t stop there. He also wanted to get stronger so his body could tackle impressive feats. 


“I definitely built the muscle and the strength,” he said. 


Building strength is essential for daily duties, especially as you age. Older adults could have sarcopenia and lose muscle mass. 


Cleveland Clinic says as many as 13% of adults above 60 have sarcopenia. For adults 80 and up, the estimates climb as high as 50%. 


Don's strength-building regimen paid off big time when he traveled to one of America's most famous national parks. 


“I just recently did a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike, and I would've never been able to accomplish that without the strength that I'd gained from working out three times a week,” he said. 


Because Don got stronger, the long trails didn't faze him. In fact, he said the backpack felt light on his shoulders, whereas the other hikers complained about the difficulty.
