Coaches and exercise professionals are human, too! When your trainer falls off the treadmill, you’ll see they have flaws. Once in a while, we take a detour on the fitness track. Mistakes and setbacks are normal, but we embrace and learn from them. If you’re feeling anxious about your workout, it’s perfectly normal. Let’s talk about gym anxiety and getting more comfortable.
Seeing Your Trainer Fall Off the Treadmill
It was a bright, early morning a few years back, and I had a full day of sessions ahead at Chris Protein Personal Training, starting at 8:00 a.m. sharp. I got there a little early to squeeze in some movement on the treadmill. My client was already there, so I hopped on the treadmill next to her to say hi.
I was immediately confused as to why I was facedown on the floor instead of upright and casually chatting, as planned, and why everything hurt. Slowly, it came together. There was one small flaw in my plan — the treadmill was already going at a full sprint. I had launched myself directly onto an accelerating belt of chaos.
My client gasped. “Are you okay?” she asked as she helped me off the floor. Other trainers and clients pointed and laughed — OK, maybe that part was just in my head. However, I was very embarrassed. My client just watched her trainer fall off the treadmill. Personal trainers guide workouts and wellness and aren’t supposed to make mistakes.
As a fitness pro, this should not happen to me, I thought. I am supposed to know the gym like the back of my hand. Yet, this wasn’t even my only blooper. I’ve snapped myself with resistance bands, dropped a weight on my foot and bumped into more machines than I can count.
So, if you’ve ever felt awkward, out of your depth or uncoordinated, welcome to the club! It’s not about getting perfect — it’s about showing up, messing up, laughing a little and keeping at it anyway. You’ve got this!
What You Learn After Your Trainer Falls Off the Treadmill
What do gym members, personal trainers and the stock market have in common? They all have their ups and downs. Progress isn’t linear for each individual, and you should embrace your pace. Be kind to yourself when you make mistakes because even industry pros can slip up. Occasionally, your trainer might have a downward dog day.
Fitness pros elsewhere may build a facade of perfection. However, we understand even personal trainers need a spotter for life’s heavy lifts. Your coach delivers a holistic fitness program and has learned much in their years of experience. Remember that your trainer is human and capable of mistakes — plus, it’s OK to laugh with them!
Overcoming Pesky Gym Anxiety

You probably won’t see your trainer fall off the treadmill on your first visit. If you do, try rebooting them or putting them in rice to recover. Regardless of your coach, it’s easy to be anxious before your first visit. Here are five tips for overcoming gym anxiety.
1. Tell Yourself You Can Do It
First, you need some confidence before walking in the door. Tell yourself that you’re flex-traordinary and can accomplish anything you set your mind to. If you’re nervous, reframe it as a game or see it as the best part of your day. Workouts lead to great things, such as endorphin production and stress relief.
2. Focus on Your Motivation
Going to the gym builds gains in confidence, not just muscles. No matter where you are on your journey, focus on what motivates you to work out. Some people do it for themselves or become inspired by their kids. Others get their drive from overcoming body pain and defying the odds.
3. Fuel up Beforehand
Energizing your body with a pre-workout snack is terrific for chewing away the jitters. Fuel up with carbs and give yourself the power to lift and do cardio. After all, experts say your diet is tied to physical health and even your mental wellness. From apples to granola bars, there are plenty of culinary ways to prep for your session.
4. Try Personal Training Sessions
If it’s just you, you might feel pressured to perform. However, you can turn gym-timidation into gym-joy by trying personal training. These sessions could be more comfortable because you have expert guidance and support.
5. Take the First Step
What’s the best way to squash the gym jitters? The first step is simply going to your first workout. Once you enter the building, you’ll see all-inclusive amenities like free weights waiting for you. Your first day doesn’t have to be a marathon — just watch out because your trainer might fall off the treadmill.
